Building Your Deck
Step By Step Instructions To Help You Complete Your Project

8. Install Steps

Before you start construction of your steps look at pre-cut stair stringers. 3, 4, and 5-step options are available. Pre-cut stringers will eliminate some of the more difficult angle cutting you would have to do otherwise. Also, look at pre-cut step treads. For construction of your own steps, measure the vertical rise and decide upon the best riser size for each step (fig. 14). This will determine the number of steps needed. The table below shows some recommended ratios of tread length and riser height. The most common is a 7" rise and 11" tread. Multiply the number of steps by the tread length to find the overall run of the stairs.
9. Install Railings

Install posts for railing. There are several factors that must be considered before adding your railing. Decks more than 30" above grade must be surrounded by a sturdy rail system. Residential deck railings should be a minimum of 36" above the deck surface and not more than 42" high. A bottom rail cannot be more than 2" above the deck surface. Also, when using any vertical side rail (spindle, baluster, etc.) they must be spaced so that an object with a 4" diameter (or greater) cannot pass through.
The deck posts can be a continuation of the posts which support the deck, or railing posts may be bolted to the outside joists or joist extensions. The main posts continue up from the actual deck floor level and by doing so provide a good sturdy railing post. Intermittent posts or spacer posts can be used between the main support posts. Top railing member can be easily nailed to side of main posts at desired height. Posts can then be cut off. Spacer posts height can be determined and added for additional support and appearance. Railing cap of suitable size can now be added as well as additional side rails. The safety and beauty of your deck are enhanced by its railings. They can be plain or very elaborate, offering as much opportunity for individual preference as a fence.
