Building Your Deck
Step By Step Instructions To Help You Complete Your Project

4. Install Posts

Locate and dig holes for footings. In normal soil the holes should be a minimum of 24" deep. Posts should go deeper than the frost line to avoid heaving during freeze and thaw cycles. Fill the bottom of the hole with gravel. Upright posts can be positioned on this base (fig 5). Fill the post hole with alternating layers 4 - 5 inches of gravel and earth. Tamp each layer until post is solid and plumb. Posts can also be set in concrete (fig 6).When setting posts make sure they are plumb and in alignment with one another.
5. Secure Beams to Posts

Secure beams to posts. Using a string and level, (fig 7), find the desired deck floor height on the posts. By subtracting the thickness of the decking and joist, you will have determined the correct height for securing the top of the beam to the post. You may cut all posts except those serving as railing support at this time. Fasten beam to post , keeping beam flush (fig 8).
6. Attach Joists
Joists are attached to ledger with rustproof fasteners and joist hangers. They must also be attached to beams and a ribbon joist.

Maximum recommended cantilever:
twice the nominal width of the lumber.
7. Install Decking

Install deck boards using hot dipped zinc-coated ring-shank nails or screws. Your deck surface is an important part of your project, and the most visible. Make it simple with boards of equal width set on joists, or if you prefer, alternate planks of different widths. Make sure you measure as you go, and if you discover that your spacing is off, adjust the next 3 or 4 boards (fig 9). When you get to the end, start adjusting your spacing to avoid a gap at the end of your deck. If you install decking using straight planking, you can trim your deck after nailing to assure a straight line (fig 10).Do not allow an overhang exceeding 1 1/2". For a more finished appearance, cut boards flush to the joist and add a fascia (fig 11).
